I'll start off by saying, in my school, we have what we call symposiums. They're similar to a J term in college. We have one class all day, for like six or seven days. In the spring, we have two of these, back to back. So about two weeks, of just one class per day. (Well, two classes. But one for about a week, then another for about a week.)
That being the case, I figured I probably wouldn't want to take any of the offered symposiums, and I know I don't need to take any one of them in particular to graduate. So I asked one of my teachers if I could just do an independent project and get credit for it. My friend did that last year when he was a senior, and he built a small bridge. If I am allowed to do a project on my own this spring, I'm planning on building a guitar. Or, at least, the body.
What do you guys think of my idea?
If this does get the OK from the school, I'll probably be coming back here a LOT to ask for help and advice, because I've never done this kind of build before.

Thanks man. I appreciate it.
I'm thinking I'll go with a bolt on neck, maybe an HH pickup config (maybe HSS. I don't know, really.), hardtail, and I have no idea what shape yet.
Does anyone know where I can find a good diagram for a body? I don't really care what body type, I just want to have a good place to start to get measurements.

We have what they call a credit flex, where you can do something on your own to count as a credit, as long as you can prove progress, and so on. As far as diagrams for bodies... Buy a template for whatever you're trying to model it after. Not very expensive, and will help a ton. They have em for just about anything.

I'm not sure I want/need a template. I mean, I know it would be useful, but I don't really want to make a "normal" guitar like a strat or a les paul. I want to make a shape that's original, my own.

Personally, If I were doing it, I would make it completely different from anything common. Mainly because the creative control is in my hands. I say, just have fun with it, but make sure you have a few measurements down so you don't skimp on a section and have to start all over again.

That's kind of what I want to do. What I'd REALLY like to do, is something kind of like the Jag or Mustang shape, but with a single cutout, if that makes sense. Kind of like if a Tele and a Mustang had a baby.
Sadly, I can't draw for crap. Could anyone maybe give me a bit of a hand with a quick sketch? It'd be much appreciated, but it doesn't matter if no one does. I just wanna show you guys what I'm thinking.

It would mainly be woodwork, honestly. And woodwork isn't too difficult for me.

Yeah, but intonation and shit is hard. Making a good guitar is what is hard.

Not if you know what you're doing and are careful.

then you're already halfway there. just go and absorb the knowledge you need, then use the skills you already have, to apply it. easy peazy. your first attempt doesn't have to be a super complicated instrument. go with a bolt on neck instead of a set neck or a thru neck. also, if i might save you some trouble then heed the following. i know everyone loves gibson guitars. me too. but truth is they are known for the headstock snapping off. it's because the 17° headstock angle combined with the truss rod hole weakens the neck at that point. it's a design flaw that could easily be fixed with a simple volute see what i'm talking about here:
