I think that any compressor based pedal will mess with his dynamics, as he mentioned. Not that I disagree with using them, because I like to compress my sound a bit, but the best bet for him to try before buying a pedal is to try top-wrapping.

Which is why you get a compressor/sustainer. If he's only looking for a little more umph.. And you properly run the pedal.. You won't loose the dynamic feel. Even the pros do it.

Economically, it'd be better to try top-wrapping

Absolutely, I agree. Just saying that it IS possible to get a great sound leaving a compressor/sustainer on an always on position for longer sustain.

Hey I agree! I do that. Haha

But I was following what OP said about him thinking it messing with his dynamics. And to some extent it would.

But I was following what OP said about him thinking it messing with his dynamics. And to some extent it would. Wouldn't even notice it if you ran it proper. There's a trick to them compressor/sustainer pedals.

I haven't messed with mine enough to know how. Haha

Well, with the little bit of time I had to play with the new verb and phaser, I found something out. Don't know why, or how, but the reverb gave me a little more sustain and oomph like I was looking for. Like I said, I don't know how though. Now the only problem I have with my tone is that there is a little bit of fizziness that id like to eliminate. I tried lowering the treble and presence on my amp, and that didn't work much. I haven't tried playing around with my eq pedal to try and fix it, but I will have the time for that tomorrow.

And I am due for a restring, so I will definitely try that top wrapping trick. It sounds like a cool idea.

I just restrung the Paul and used both the techniques in that link you posted. I haven't had time to plug it in yet, so I can't say if the sustain has increased. But, while I was working on stretching them out, they felt a lot slinkier, like the article said they would. Almost feels like playing my strat.
