So I'm looking to try to do some work on guitars for money. Like, swapping pickups, simple set up stuff, maybe paint, things like that. But I've realized I have two dilemmas.
One, I'm not sure if I should even try, without knowing more of what I'm doing. I mean, I know how to set up a guitar, and I can solder well enough, but I haven't had a lot of time fixing guitars. I know the main way that I could remedy this is to work on more guitars, but to get guitars to work on, I need money, and I just don't have money right now. (That's kind of why I want to do this.)
Two, I don't know how to get it out there that I could do that. I don't know how to advertise, I guess. I've thought about advertising on craigslist, but I'm kind of afraid of running into a job that I don't know how to handle, and I don't know if people will even want to talk to me about their guitars. The local music shop does all kinds of work (except for painting) pretty well, and pretty cheap.
I don't know if any of you guys have experience in this kind of stuff, but any advice or input would be really appreciated.
Thanks guys.

Go to a guitar shop and ask them if they would take you under their wing. Tis what I did. I work in a small mom and pop shop and they took me under their wing since i am always in their store. Show them that you can set up a guitar, prove to them you are willing to learn, and prove you have the reliability to get things done. When you have done this, you will be golden. IT is not a bad profession to be in honestly

What Samb said. Also, you could keep doing resetups on your own guitars.. Honing your ability to do that aspect of it. In my opinion.. Setting up a guitar (action and intonation) are the two hardest things to do as far as modification goes, on a guitar. There isn't a guideline for it or how to do it. Many different methods that all reach the same end result. And it's a feel thing. Sure, soldering is as we'll.. But you can only wire pickups one way in a standard strat configuration, for example. 3 pickups, volume, two tone, 5 way selector switch. To wire up like any other strat.. There is only one way.. And with this day in age.. There are a ton of resources to help with that online. I'd get a soldering iron, some solder.. And just practice with anything you can find that you can test a connection with.. To start practicing your soldering skills. Everything else is just knowing how to take stuff apart and put it back together. Then, again.. The art of setting up a guitar.

Thanks, guys. When I can (probably when i get a job) I plan on spending more time at the local guitar shop, just hanging out and talking to the guys there.
What do you guys think about possibly putting up an ad on craigslist saying I could do work for people?
