Looking for this tone lately, how do you guys reckon it? I've always liked that sort of muffled tone he gets, especially the sound at the 0:08 to 0:15 or whatever.

I'm gonna be honest.. That really sounds like heavy tube compression. I'd venture to say that the amp that was recorded was probably blaring. It was probably a Fender of some shape and size. Neil Young used them quite a bit. Also sounds like a hollow body to me. I'd say that the best way to get this kind of sound would be with a signal booster, a hint of compression, and a small amount of overdrive.. In that order. If using a guitar loaded with single coils, try neck pickup / neck & middle pickup positions for a fatter sound. I can guarantee that this was recorded with either humbuckers or P90s. Ideally, you'd like to have something with those pickups in it.. But again, it sounds like a hollow body, to me.
Hope this helps some.

I'm looking into to getting a solid hollow body sometime. Do you think that this tone would require a reverb?

It's actually a studio-recorded album, but I take your point as the album was mostly recorded as live jams, in a studio though of course.

You take me some sort of chump. lol. You know me. :D Only know about the things I know about, if you catch my meaning.
You can never have enough reverb btw, just saying.
