I don't know if any of you guys have any insight on this, but me and the guys in the band have thrown in the white towel as far as finding a vocalist goes. So I've decided to give it a whirl pulling double duty. But what do I need to know about (not being a contestant on The Voice or even being a very good singer anyways) about improving and being the best I can be, given the voice I have? Any takers? It is important to note, not much of the vocals will be cleans, mostly aggressive (screams, etc.). That's not what I'm worried about, I'd rather improve my singing before I deal with that.

Find an artist with a singing voice close to yours. Practice singing to their songs while driving, it'll help you practice without fear of sucking. No one can hear you! Then find some songs where the singers voice isn't spot on with yours. Try to nail the notes, it'll help "stretch" your range out after some time. It will also help you build a technique for nailing hard notes. This will help you find a singing range you are comfortable with.
As for playing guitar along with it, try humming while playing the song. It'll get you used to multi-tasking without messing up. Then move into the words.
