so today, i'm workin my butt off when i get this phone call. it's my friendly neighborhood big box guitar store calling to tell me my amp has arrived. (2 weeks ahead of schedule) so, of course i did what any normal guy would do. immediately after work i went to the bank, cashed my check, went home and changed, then headed off to pick up my new amp. it's a vox lil' nitetrain. 2 watts into 16 ohms, or 1.5 watts into 8 ohms. it has a different sound than the ac4 i used to have. because it has a gain/vol set up i can dial in the dirt at lower levels. had a bunch of other stuff to do before i could fool with it too much, so tomorrow i can say more. but for right now, i can say, it sounds good, it seems to do what i want it to do. tomorrow it gets the workout. i'll run though the full gamut of my catalog, and play with the knobs.

well, i just played it for about 3 hours. it does classic, hard rock REALLY well. without any assistance from my dirt pedals, i can get my strat screamin like a banshee at living room volumes. there's little headroom, but that's how it is with low wattage tube amps. the cleans you get though, are chimey and nice. with the bright switch set to thick, you can get a really nice chug going, ala - you got another thing coming. even though the amp seems to have all the gain i could ask for, when i switch on the ds-1, it doesn't get uncontrollable. but it's like being robin trower in your living room with the gain up in thick mode and the ds-1 on and the flanger going. but you can dial down the gain and turn up the volume and get a chimey sound that will do nice jangly stuff, or even country sounds if you want. i think the distortion is a bit on the fizzy side in bright mode. in thick it's not bad, but it's a little heavier. bear in mind that i am playing a strat, s-s-s. so all amps can be a little ice picky with these. with the break up i get from this amp, i suspect a humbucker guitar could go into serious crunchitude . i'm already looking around to see what mods others have done. i want to make the bright thick switch be on the floor. this is a good living room amp. however, i'm not really a fan of 10" speaker cabs, especially closed back ones. so i dont reccomend the vox cab. find yourself a nice 12" semi-open cab with a good spkr in it, like i did. the ac4 wasa good amp. this one is too, but slightly different. if a future tube swap goes as i suspect it will, this amp is gonna be frickin awesome.

That would be a great motto: 'Banshee like screams, at living room like volumes'

while it does make good blues tones, it's real forte' is rock. this amp has alot of gain. the ac4 was a better blues amp. if i had a humbucker guitar i might feel otherwise though
